There was once a girl who no longer believed in love.
This girl had found herself falling in love, one Spring moment.
As buds grew and unfurled, and she found herself sinking deeper into love
She felt both happy and sad.
Because she knew that once she fell, she’d be falling forever.
She tried to stop the blossoming of her heart, as it filled her body
with light and joy.
And as Summer withered to Autumn and his love grew cold,
she felt her heart shrivel as it felt the inevitability of loss.
For this girl’s heart was constant.
Once it beat for a man, or a friend, it never wavered. But it
stuttered and cracked and iced a little more each time her love outlived his.
Every time.
Each heartache made the ice climb higher, thicker and stronger,
and her heart grew trapped.
But this girl’s heart still hoped.
This girl’s heart tried to warm the ice with its love,
even as inconstant men tore it apart with a sudden withdrawal.
This girl marvelled at its wounded strength.
Its steady rhythm beat out forgiveness and trust to an empty universe
despite her best efforts.
This girl knew it deserved more than the pale imitation of love-shy boys.
It deserved the steady glow that forced back the dark of the endless night.
It deserved more than to be wasted on the unworthy.
This girl believed that the ice had grown hard and all was lost.
But this girl’s heart knew it would win through again
for the worthy.
This heart waited.
There once was a girl who no longer believed in love.
But her heart did.
Very good. Always believe. Life is full of surprises.
